With the anticipated Open Championship just around the corner, we at Sleigh are here to remind you just how fantastic Scotland is for golf fans. Evidently, the Old Course remains the most iconic, but never let it be said that the Old Course is all Scotland has to offer us golfers. Here are Sleigh’s top four picks for our favourite public courses.
1. Carnoustie
Carnoustie, in Angus, has three courses all of which are open to the public. The Championship Course was developed in 1850 is most definitely our favourite despite having a reputation for being unpredictable and challenging due to its exposure to high winds. Nevertheless, it has hosted seven Open Championships and is set to host 2018’s tournament.

2. Kingsbarns
Just six miles outside of St Andrews is Kingsbarns. The initial course was first developed in 1793, but the course as we recognise it today is was designed and constructed by Kyle Philips in 2000. The Kingsbarns Golf Links has co-hosted the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and will do so again in October this year.
3. Western Gailes
The greens at Western Gailes in Ayrshire are among the finest in Scotland. Since it was established in 1897, it has become the home of the top amateur golfing tournaments in the country, most recently the 2011 Scottish Amateur Championship. It’s a beautiful course, boasting three burns and impressive views of the Firth of Clyde.
4. St Andrew’s New Course
Less famous than its older neighbour, the New Course nevertheless offers a fantastic and challenging game. The oldest ‘new’ course in the world, it was designed in 1895 and is now one of seven St Andrews courses. Visitors can purchase 3 or 7 day tickets which allow you access to all of the St Andrews courses (excluding the Old Course), so you can fully enjoy all that the Home of Golf has to offer.
